Remote Education for Whole Class Closure

Remote Education Provision: Information for Parents

This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education if local restrictions require entire cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home.

For details of what to expect where individual pupils are self-isolating, please see the final section of this page.

The Remote Curriculum: what is taught to pupils at home

A pupil’s first day of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching.

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day of pupils being sent home?

  • If are children sent home in the morning, work will be uploaded to google classrooms for the first afternoon. Packs will be produced and parents will be contacted when they are available to be collected from the school office.

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

  • We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we have needed to make some adaptations in some subjects. For example, in PE and art.

Remote teaching and study time each day

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

  • The class timetable will be sent home with lessons to last about the same hours as a normal school day.

Accessing Remote Education

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

  • Through google classrooms
  • There are guidelines on how to log on but if you have problems, please call the school office.

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

  • We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home.If you have issues accessing online learning, please contact the school.

How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:

We will use a blended approach including;

  • live’ registration
  • live teaching for English and maths (online lessons)
  • live french and music sessions.
  • small group reading sessions with an adult
  • small group sharing session with an adult
  • spelling and arithmetic tests will continue to take place on a weekly basis.
  • recorded teaching (e.g. Oak National Academy lessons, video/audio recordings made by teachers)
  • printed paper packs produced by teachers (e.g. workbooks, worksheets)
  • textbooks and reading books pupils have at home
  • commercially available websites supporting the teaching of specific subjects or areas, including video clips or sequences

Engagement and Feedback

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

  • Children are expected to log on every day and complete the given daily tasks.
  • Please ensure that the children have the appropriate tools to access the learning and they are set in up an suitable learning environment.

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

  • In the event that your child is ill, recovery should be the priority. Please inform the school office if your child is unwell.
  • If your child is unable to log on for lessons, you must inform the class teacher in advance with the reason for this absence. Please note that if a child has not logged on for registration, and no notice has been received, this will trigger an absence phone call from the school.

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Feedback can take many forms.

  • Some writing pieces, the children will self-assess against given criteria and the teacher will view this self-assessment
  • Some quizzes will be marked automatically via digital platforms
  • At least once a piece of written work will be submitted for feedback
  • Some maths work will be marked together at the end of the lesson.

Behaviour and Appearance

  • Online, they are expected to communicate in a respectful way, as they would if they were in school.
  • All School policies, including the Safeguarding Policy and the Behaviour Policy (available on the school website) apply when children are working online. Pupils are not expected to dress in school uniform when working at home. However, the online learning environment is an extension of the classroom, for which they are expected to dress appropriately.
  • Please see our Remote Learning Guidelines and Expectations.

Additional Support for Pupils with Particular Needs

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:

  • When your child does not usually access the whole class learning, we will provide;
  • some small group live teaching
  • differentiated activities

Remote Education for Self-Isolating Pupils

Where individual pupils need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, how remote education is provided will likely differ from the approach for whole groups. This is due to the challenges of teaching pupils both at home and in school.

If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above?

  • Your child will not necessarily access any live lessons.
  • The class PowerPoint for English and maths will be uploaded to google classrooms to explain the given activity
  • Activity sheets from lessons will be uploaded for children to complete.
  • Children will be asked by the class teacher to submit appropriate work

We very much hope that this approach will provide a more fulfilling and motivational home learning experience, both for your child and for you as parents.

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to all the staff who contributed, the provision of online lessons must be another burden in challenging times and it is really appreciated.” Class 10 parent

At Northgate, we see education as a continual process, which does not stop at the end of the school day.

Home learning reinforces work that children have done at school and so we expect our pupils to undertake out of school assignments, as set by the class teacher, such as learning tables and spellings, book studies, and topic work. Home learning is sent home through E-schools in either class or year groups. This could include documents and web links.

Parental encouragement in work sent home is essential for children's overall progress and we encourage you to use the Home Learning book as a tool for communication with the school regarding home learning matters. Visiting the Library and sharing books with your child is also a very important part of home learning.
