Sports Premium

Evidence and Impact of Sports Premium Funding
Outcome of Sports Premium Funding

The Government introduced the Sports Premium funding in 2013 to help primary schools improve the quality of PE and sporting activities that they offer their pupils.

Over £450 million has been allocated over 3 academic years 2013 to 2014, 2014 to 2015 and 2015 to 2016.

Northgate Primary School receives Sports Premium funding based on the number of pupils in years 1 to 6 and the allocations are based on data gathered through the School Census.  We receive a lump sum of £8,000 plus an additional payment of £5 per pupil.

The funding must be spent on initiatives to improve the quality of PE and sporting activities that we offer our pupils, however we are free to choose the best way of using the money to achieve this.

At Northgate our broad aims for the Sports Grant are as follows:

  1.         To increase the quality of teaching and learning in PE and to broaden the range of sporting     activities available to children.
  2.         To increase the provision of competitive opportunities for all children, leading to a sense of achievement and higher levels of success.
  3.         To encourage greater awareness of healthy lifestyle and safety issues amongst children and their families and the positive impact of these on physical wellbeing.

Our school already provides a well-balanced, fun and enjoyable PE curriculum which encourages children to become physically active, boosts their confidence and provides them with life-skills.  Children receive a minimum of 2 hours per week quality PE using a variety of equipment and resources.  They experience a broad range of sporting opportunities in which they can develop skills and excel in activities which are challenging and inclusive.  We value sporting excellence and cater for talented individuals as well as encouraging all children to be active and make healthy choices.

We offer a variety of competitive opportunities throughout the year, both within school and against other schools.  These competitions encourage children to develop values such as fairness, respect, teamwork, cooperation and self-esteem.  There are also opportunities for children to lead, manage and officiate in school games activities.

There is a well-established programme of extra-curricular activities provided after school, and at lunch times and we aim to increase levels of participation with the Sports Premium Funding.  We promote healthy active lifestyles and this has a positive effect on academic subjects too.

In October 2015, Northgate Primary School was accredited with the Sainsbury’s Gold Games Award in recognition of the sports provision at the school.
